0.9.4 Update
A Taste for the King has gone through several iterations since the print and play version was updated back in December. The game now has indicators on the back of the deck cards to help give players more of an informed choice about their actions. As a result, the game also has more cards overall, balancing for this extra information in the game. The game is still in early access but it is getting close to its final form.
Recent Changes
Added Course Indicators to the back of the cards. This gives players a sense of which cards to discard and which to keep.
More poisons in the game. To counteract the extra information each player has about the cards, there's now a greater chance of drawing a poison than ever before. Two poisons and you end your turn without scoring so watch out! Each course also has a slightly variable amount of poisons in each game to keep things fresh and prevent players memorising a strategy.
More action cards in the game. To balance the game a little I have added more actions to the deck. Actions generally help you in your journey to complete your meal.
Less cards to collect to win the game. To speed up play and help with pacing a whole course has been removed from the game. Each player also now only needs to collect 12 dishes instead of 16. I am still debating if I should reduce the count further so that each player only needs to collect 2 dishes from each course for a total of 8 of a possible 12. My main concern with this is having an intuitive way to indicate when a player has won as each course has 3 possible dishes to collect and some may not realise they have collected the 8 that they need and push further than necessary.
Future Changes
To try and reduce the downtime for players outside of their turn, I am toying with the idea of giving each player some actions that they can perform during other players' turns. I'm all for this idea but with the current card count this is quite difficult to do. I will be looking into this as development continues!
